Year-End Peckings

Hiya,

Okay, so a few things happened over the past 12 months; some good, some not-so-good, and some that were probably rooting for that Mayan Calendar Apocalyptic Bunfest thingy to go down as planned. But we think the best way to round things up would be to ask our inner Order Muppet that immortal Gilmore Girls question: What Would Rory Do?

The Answer: Make A List.

Okay, lists are fun. Lists put chaos through the spanking machine. Lists give hapless husbands a blueprint to buy more than Corn Chips and Beef Jerky when sent to the grocery store. Lists make pretty pretty music (okay, that was Franz Liszt). Lists make boats tip over. Lists are the funny noises that come from the mouths of teenagers with brand-new lip rings. Lists count things down.

So, in no particular order, here’s our Fun List of the Top 10 Colourways of 2012.

#4) Venison, The Spare Reindeer

#7) Cosby Sweater Repair Kit

#2) The Urkel Of Life (you’re still singing it, aren’t you? Try tacking on “The Eel Of Fortune” right after it for added giggles, but you’re on yer own from there…)

#10) Xanadon’t

#5) The Platypus: The El Camino Of The Animal World

#3) Jim Henson’s Recycle Bin

#9) Türtljägr: For When Frögschläger Just Won’t Do.

#6) Knoll Coward

#1) John Tesh, Piano Slayer

#11) Carpe Carp (Seize The Fish)

And finally, coming in at #8 with a bullet…

Sailor Bait: The Official Lipstick Of The 2012 Walk Of Shame!!

And so, you now ask (Ask! Ask!), what’s in store for 2013??

Well for starters, there’s a sorta sooper seekrit (but not really) expedition planned for sometime in January to do as Frankie says an’ Relax, but to also spend some time tracking down yarn & fibre from the elusive West Coast Penal Colony Polwarth, a sheep so legendary it believes its own myth. A sheep so shifty sand dunes are envious. A sheep so rarely seen it makes Snuffleupagus seem like a Kardashian.

Next, we’ll be travelling to the tropical climes of Southern Ontario and finding out just how much bail costs to get out of the Kitchener-Waterloo hoosegow. Not that there’ll be any Jayne-like Public Relations incidents afoot, but ye locals have been warned.

Afterwards, it’s pretty much like the Lord Of The Rings movie trilogy. Walk, walk, stop, dye, walk, plod, dye some more, go to the post office, walk, dye, plot, scheme, feed minion, look for precious etc. And that’s just February 3rd. The Morning of.

Beyond that, it’s pretty much anybody’s guess, although There Will Be Yarn. Lots. Of. Yarn. Buttloads. Of. Yarn. Did we mention there will be Yarn? Yes, Yarn. Oh, and probably, Yarn.

And one final thing – at the beginning of 2012, we started adding a few additional  vitalmins and nourishmints to the sunflower seeds we put out for our local herd of chickadees to nosh on. We think the results speak for themselves…

…and these are just the chicks!!!

Party On, Garth!

Giftapalooza: the Spoiler Edition!

Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate!  Happy Tuesday to those of you who don’t.  However you choose to spend your day, I hope at least part of it involves being curled up on the couch with some yarny goodness.

Now the annual tradition of revealing Giftapalooza begins…

If you’re still waiting for your Giftapalooza package or haven’t opened it yet and don’t want spoilers, STOP READING HERE.  I mean it.  There will be pictures and everything.

The post will still be here when you’re ready.  I promise.

The Patterns:

We had an incredible response to our call for proposals for Giftapalooza patterns…the first call we’ve ever put out!  All patterns are designed to work with any of our sock/fingering weight yarns.

Out of the nearly 100 patterns, we chose these 4:

Choose fingerless or full mitten options, with elegant details…a cabled cuff and picot edging.

Kuu by Allyson Sgro

A lace shawlette/shawl available in 3 sizes and multiple variations on the lace pattern…choose and combine your favourites for a truly unique wrap!

Our first crochet design! We loved the unusual shape of this wrap, and the fact that it can be adjusted to use the amount of yarn that you have on hand.  One colour, two colours, 50 colours…it’s all possible.

Unreasonable Obsession by Avril Lang

We loved the graphic quality of this shawl and the cozy ruffled edge.

Thanks to Shelley Schell and my students at the Haliburton School of the Arts who braved the first sub-zero day this winter to help me take photos.

All patterns will be available on Ravelry as part of the 4 pattern ebook in late January for $12.  Individual patterns will be available from the designers starting in early March.

The Yarn:

Giftapalooza colours are one-of-a-kind, non-repeatable (nope. sorry. not possible.) colourways.  Playing and improvising in the dyepot, with no measuring or careful plotting is our favourite way to dye.  The result? Spontaneous, rich, multi-facetted colourways that sing.

Each of these colours was dyed on one base only:  Merino Sock, Merino Silk 4 ply Sock or Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Sock (new base to be released widely in late January 2013)

What I Knit on My Winter Holiday…

1) We’re winding down production to take a long, well-deserved break.

Indigodragonfly will be closed from December 22 – January 21.
We will not be responding to email during that time.  BUT! Please feel free to continue ordering yarn (I know a few of you will have gift certificates burning a hole in your pocket) and placing custom orders.  We’ll answer email and invoice and ship in the order your requests come in.

2) All Knitty yarn orders placed from today onwards will be dyed once we get back in late January.  The response to this colour has been fantastic.  Thank you! 🙂

3) There will be a price increase on some of our yarns, starting January 21.  Bases affected will be:  all MCN bases (Lace, Sock, Sport, Worsted), Ultra MCN SockMCS Sock and MCS Worsted, which will go up to $32 per skein; Merino Sock and Merino Nylon Sock, which will increase to $25 and Merino Silk 4 ply Sock which will increase to $35.  We will honour current prices for all in stock and all custom orders for these bases between now and January 21.

4) There are 2.5 very full days of work ahead of me, yet what am I thinking about?  What I’m going to knit on my winter vacation.

I already have Celestartium on the needles.

Everything in Cookie A‘s Shapes and Forms Volume 1!  OK, maybe just finish Rotation and play with Pivot and Quotient.  And maybe Radial.  And if I could just figure out whether Slope would work on me or not…I kind of want to knit it anyway…

Thorn.  Sigh.

A little birdie gifted me the Sitka Spruce hat pattern.  Which only makes me want to knit Snowflake.  And while we’re at it, Drift is looking very cozy…

And then there’s been the obsession I’ve had with Amalia since I saw this sample at Shall We Knit in June 2010…

Amalia_Large_Blue_Spread_Out_IMG_1600-1

Yep.  That should be just enough knitting to get me through 4 weeks.

Totally doable, right?  RIGHT???

That’s what I thought you said…

Bare Naked Knitspot

I’m a dyer.  And am madly in love with colour.  But when I’m at fibre festivals, it’s the natural yarns that I’m drawn to.  Ones that come from small companies and small family farms.

Anne Hanson’s Bare Naked Knitspot Club focuses on just that: yarns and patterns that show off the amazing range of colours and textures of some of Anne’s favourite natural finds.

The club is a six month membership of fibers in their natural, undyed state where members learn about and appreciate the unique characteristics of each. yarns will be a surprise each month but will include a range of animal and/or vegetable fibers (sheep, goat, camelids, yak, silk, and cotton are some possibilities) in shades from cream to khaki to gray to chocolate—”sheepy” yarns if you will. Some will be soft, some will be lustrous, some will have stout, sturdy character that softens over time with long use (like vintage blue jeans). yarn weights will vary; projects will focus on accessories, scarves, and shawls (possibly including a sock or baby item) that feature lace and openwork stitch patterns.

It never fails to amaze me how much colour there can be in “natural” yarns.  Just look at this rich green cotton!

I still have a sweater made with one of the very first “colour grown” cottons.  It’s amazing how far this process has come.

And this cool, stone grey alpaca/merino/nylon blend, spun especially for Anne, makes me desperately wish I wasn’t allergic to alpaca!!

::sigh::

And the latest offering is this beautiful, caramel silk…

yarnCol_5x41-1024x744

All, of course, enhanced by Anne’s exquisite designs, in a range from the very clean and simple…

to textures you want to snuggle up in…
