Giftapalooza!

It’s that time again!  Remember Holiday Secret Giftapalooza? It’s back!

Today we’re posting to let you know all the amazing things we’ve planned for you this year.  Sign ups will begin on Thursday November 1 at 9:00 am Eastern (Toronto/New York time)

The basics are the same:

1) Throw your Name into the e-Hat by choosing a package, extras & shipping preference you wish to Send. This means that someone will get this Gift courtesy of You, and that someone else will be sending you a gift of equal value & options in their name.
Deadline: December 1, or when all spaces are filled.

2) Paypal does its thing and you click Return to Indigodragonfly Designs when it’s done.  Trust us.  You don’t want to miss that step.

3) We mail it out by December 1, in time to (postal gods willing!) reach you by your chosen holiday celebration.

4) Sit by the mail box in eager anticipation. (Please Note: Be eager, but not too eager. Do not scare your Postal Employee, and um, you may want to wait until AFTER we mail packages in early December. Nobody likes a post-Hallowe’en ankle-grabber.)

What’s New!

More patterns!
Every package will receive an ebook, delivered to your Ravelry library with 4 patterns.
A) Knit: graphic, 2-colour, garter stitch shawl
B) Knit: lace shawlette/shawl with options for 1 or 2 skein version (1 colour)
C) Knit: mittens with elegant cabled details (full hand and fingerless versions)
D) Crochet: 1 or 2 colour scarf/shawl.  Size and colour play are both adjustable.

More yarn bases!
Choose from 3 yarn bases: Merino Sock, Merino Silk 4-ply Sock and a brand new base we’re calling Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Sock!  Colourways will still be one-of-a-kind, non-repeatable ones, not available anywhere else.
Merino Sock: 100% superwash merino, 2 ply, 390 yds/100 g
Merino Silk 4-ply Sock: 50% superwash merino/50% silk, 4 ply, 340 yds/100 g
Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Sock (RPSL): 80% superwash, superfine merino/10% cashmere/10% nylon, 3 ply, 400 yds/100 g

You want to know more about the RPSL Sock, don’t you?  Cause it sounds a lot like MCN Sock…but it’s not! This yarn was designed and spun especially for us.  It’s woolen spun, giving it loft and lightness that combined with the superfine merino and cashmere, is like knitting a cloud. Scarves and cowls float around your neck.  Sweaters snuggle around you.  It’s completely different than our other yarns.  And as you wash it, the merino and cashmere will combine to become softer and softer, creating a halo of warmth around you. It’s my new favourite yarn.

Nut Free: for those who need a nut free option, please email us directly at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca.  We have a limited amount of Sea Cell Silk that would be an excellent alternative for these patterns.

More skeins!
This year, you’ll have the option of adding more skeins to your package, in any of the 3 options.  We’ll offer “same colour” (suitable for patterns B & D) and “contrasting colour” (suitable for patterns A & D) options.

More interaction!
Quite possibly our favourite part of last year’s exchange was getting the metric tonne of notes, pictures, favourite recipes, patterns and other fun pieces to include in each package.  It really let us know how much of a community we have here. This year we look forward to more of the same, but with a twist: when you sign up for Giftapalooza, you agree to allow us to share your first name, your email address and your Ravelry name with your Giftapalooza partner.  This will allow you to exchange messages and other fun with your partner all through the madness of the holiday season.

So there’s your sneak peek. 🙂  Meet us back here on Thursday at 9 am to sign up!

Knit City

Whew! It’s been a whirlwind of a month! Time to catch you up on where we’ve been.

A couple of weeks ago, Ron and I headed out to Knit City in Vancouver. So. Much. Fun. (You know, after the teeny tiny plane troubles that involved, according to our flight attendant, a door to the plane that wouldn’t shut)

Highlight of opening night was Kim Werker’s talk about crochet. Holy contagious energy! Here’s Kim’s best Godzilla impression…

20121029-151333.jpg

Just kidding. Kim gave us lots of food for thought. Sometimes it’s not one technique over the other, but looking at the fibre arts technique that gives us the effect (i.e.: fabric) we want in the most efficient and beautiful way possible.

Lots of vendors in the marketplace:

Krista from Rain City Knits in rainboots I covet.

20121029-151421.jpg

Heidi from Quo Vadis was our neighbour again (we were booth neighbours at Sock Summit as well!)

20121029-151433.jpg

Tina and Lesley from Pollika

20121029-151455.jpg

And these amazing hand felted masks from SoulFibre were right across from us. 20121029-151533.jpg

We met some of our customers for the first time, like Janet with her Caulfield in progress:

20121029-151520.jpg

And Marjorie and May with yarn they’ve chosen to knit Spatial Distortion.

20121029-151359.jpg

But the heart and soul of Knit City are its hostesses, Fiona

20121029-151507.jpg

…and Amanda.

20121029-151555.jpg

Congratulations on an event well done my friends!!  See you next year.

Belated, Beloved.

Friday was Ron’s birthday.  And since I wasn’t able to be upright or focus for more than a few minutes at a time and because Ron was off bowling for the wolves yesterday, we’ve decided to celebrate today.  So just pretend with me that it’s really Friday and that there’s still a whole weekend ahead…you know you want to…

It is with no exaggeration that I tell you that this has been the worst year. Death, family illness, wedding date set and cancelled…twice, death, family reshuffling, house purchase from hell, playing constant catch-up with our schedule, family illness…  All this mixed in with the very best of times for our business…the very best dream opportunities coming at absolutely the very worst times.  Ever stir a dyepot for your dream yarn support source while packing for your mother’s death & funeral?  Yes.  That kind of extreme.  The kinds of extremes that have led us to the point where the well runs dry and the computer breaks down all in one week and we just kind of sit there and say “of course the well ran dry and the computer broke down.”  Because there’s nothing left.

This has been the year that Ron has taken it all on. Usually it’s me in the lead, but that’s changed this year.  Ron’s kept the house and business going while I travel to teach and promote us. He’s kept up the household when I’m too exhausted. He alone dealt with #20,001 & co. on the house deal from hell at the worst time possible…and for that alone, I may owe him until the end of time. (it’s the only time I’ve seen him REALLY angry) He’s taken on more of the business, shifting into roles that make me very proud to know him.  And for one very important week this year, he shut ME down.  Fired me.  Gave me an actual virtual pink slip. I’m still kind of speechless.

He’s developed a strange fascination with the house inspection binder.  I keep finding it in the strangest places.

His colours are still some of my favourites…and usually ones that I wouldn’t choose.

He’s come to expect hotels to clearly lay out signs stating their circus animal expectations.

He found Louie. He made friends with Louie. He and Louie spend quality time everyday.  We really really need to get another dog…

A year ago, I thought he was a better partner than I could ever expect, both in life and in business.  This year, he’s not only proved that to be correct, but has raised the bar several octaves.  The fact that he’s survived, that I’ve survived, and more importantly, that WE’VE survived and still actually like each other?  That’s a lot to celebrate.

Happy Birthday Ron!

PS: If you’re in Toronto and free this Thursday, November 1, join us for the launch party of Ron’s latest poetry collection, Atlas Sneezed (Montreal publisher Cactus Press)  at the Black Swan, 154 Danforth Ave. (doors open at 7:30, readings start at 8:00)

Bowling & Books!

Hi There,

On Saturday October 27, I’ll be slipping on my special shiny gold-patent-leather (pleather?) bowling shoes and spending two hours on the planks as part of a Bowling Marathon to raise funds for the Haliburton County Red Wolves. HCRW is a volunteer organization that is part of Special Olympics Ontario and offers training and sporting competitions for special ability athletes from ages 11 to 65, as well as helping out with other costs such as transportation and accommodation. I am a proud member of the community radio station Canoe FM‘s Tippy Canoe Team (but no Tyler too, unfortunately for U.S. readers), and if I bowl really poorly, then at least I can say I was the team’s anchor (insert groan here).

On Thursday November 1, Kim & I are attending the Toronto release party/reading bunfest/excuse to drink until one can no longer spell properly of my latest poetry collection entitled Atlas Sneezed by Montreal publisher Cactus Press. This is a fine collection of word-bending hooliganism, and I guarantee a thee and thou frou frou-free reading experience. Yes, I write more than awesome yarn colourway names and ad copy!

We will be taking back up north with us 50 copies of Atlas, and I would like to offer them to you the Indigodragonfly family first. They’ll be going for $10 each (tax & shipping included!), and $3 of that will be going to the Red Wolves folk. If you would like to spend a few dollars extra for a copy, that extra amount will go fully to the HCRW. And if that weren’t incentive enough, The Otis Houndation will be matching dollar for dollar the charitable portion of all monies raised. All ordering and billing will be done through the usual orders@indigodragonfly.ca yarn hotline, and let me know if you’d like the copy to be autographed or including any special inscription.

So, Act Now! Don’t Delay! Louie the Guard Chipmunk is waiting to take your order! (Well, he’s probably just hanging around looking for sunflower seeds, but he has to earn his keep somehow so might as well put him in charge of the shipping…) If there are any unexpected delays in getting the books from the Publisher (as they’re not scheduled to be in my furry little paws until Nov. 1), all purchasers will be notified ASAP.

So, to sum things up: Recycle A Tree, Support A Good Cause, Stroke A Maniacal Writers’ Inflated Ego! Also, check out Canoe FM online – community radio at its finest (including my show Needles & Threads: Monday nights from 9 – 10 pm Eastern Standard Time) – A Must!

Thanks for your support,

Gutterball Evans

To purchase any of the above yarn, please send me an email at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca (replace AT with “@”, no spaces) indicating which colours(s) you would like, where you live and whether you want it shipped surface or air mail. First email request for each yarn/fibre secures it. I will send you a paypal invoice for the full amount plus shipping and ship the packages off within 3-5 days. Shipping charges to the US will start at $5.97 for surface mail and $7.61 for air mail. Canada Post doesn’t make shipping charges for Canadian or International packages easy, so a shipping quote will be sent as part of your invoice for your approval. You are welcome to cancel the order at that time. Best attempts are made to photograph colours accurately, however colours do differ from monitor to monitor (I’ve checked). I’ve also described the colours…and hope that helps. Custom orders (including dyeing or overdyeing your own fibre or yarn) are always welcomed! Just email me with what you have in mind.

Nilgiri

Introducing a new pattern designed with indigodragonfly yarn!

Nilgiri is part of Laura Chau‘s  Afternoon Tea Collection, Volume Two.  Knit in MCN Worsted in Tiny Bloodsucking Dancer, this cardigan features a geometric lace pattern.  Laura always includes elegant details in her designs, and this one includes folded, knit in hems that give a tailored finish.

We think this would be equally lovely knit in MCS Worsted.

Pattern details:

NILGIRI is a pretty cardigan with a geometric lace pattern. The unique stitch pattern is easy and fast to work, and great for a beginner lace knitter. The relaxed shape of this cardigan is perfect dressed up or down. Neat hems and garter stitch bands offset the lacy pattern.

The body of Nilgiri is worked in one piece from the bottom up, beginning with a provisional cast on and knit-in hem. Sleeves are worked flat from the bottom to the underarm, then joined together with the body to work the seamless raglan yoke.

Finished Sizes: 29.75 (33.75, 37.75, 41.75, 45.75, 49.75, 53.75, 57.75) inches

Yardage: 870 (990, 1050, 1280, 1400, 1525, 1645, 1770) yds or 5 (5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 9, 9) skeins of indigodragonfly MCN Worsted or MCS Worsted

To order yarn for your size in your favourite colour, email us at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca

Off to Knit City!

We’re on our way to Knit City in Vancouver BC.  If you’re on the west coast, come and see us in Booth #25!

We’ve taken almost all of our stock with us.  What remains is here and here.  Feel free to place orders while we’re gone, either for remaining stock or custom order, but your yarn will not be shipped until after October 16.

We’ll update the Available Yarn pages when we, and our stock, get home. 🙂

Don’t forget:  Ron is looking for help programming his radio show on our local radio station, Canoe FM.  Help him out by sending him ONE of your favourite songs for an upcoming show.

Needles & Threads

Hi everyone…

As many of you may know (or don’t know), I host a weekly radio program. The show is called Needles & Threads, and is on our community station 100.9 Canoe FM Monday nights from 9 – 10 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, and is also carried on the internet at www.canoefm.com .

Each week, I usually choose a specific theme or logical song progression – for instance, last week’s show was songs with a really heavy, prominent bass line, and this week’s show features some of the best vocalists of Rock, Pop, R&B and Soul from the past 60 years.

So what does this mean to you??

Well, what I’m looking for is to do a show of your favourite songs – what I request is the song title, the artists, your first name, city, province/state. Guidelines for your song – it must be a good song, have no foul words in the lyrics, be preferably 5 minutes long or less, available on iTunes, and oh yeah, it must be a good song. I can get away with playing just about any music genre, but please no Bird Dance, Macarena or Kenny G requests!

You can send me your song request by either leaving a comment at the end of this post, or send it by email to ron@indigodragonfly.ca . Let me know in one sentence as to why this is your favourite song if it has any special significance to you etc. – sell it!

The deadline for song requests will be October 26, and the show will air on Monday October 29. And if I get enough requests, there can always be a second show on the following Monday.

Okay, so there you have it. I suggest you at least check out the radio station’s website – it has live streaming, and a very diverse show schedule. 1 a.m. to 5 p.m. is a mix of songs from the 40s to the present, and there’s approx. 20 – 30 DJs doing different shows up until 1 a.m. most every night.

Okay – let’s crank out some good tunes!

-Ron 🙂

Yarn Update: Search & Rescue, and a Few Good Friends!

Okay, so now some yarn goodness to keep the project bags warm!

Today’s update is labelled Search & Rescue because we had some skeins at a local gallery, and was recently rescued from there. Some of these skeins and bases have not been available on-line (or at all!) for awhile, so there’s definitely  some collectors items here! And at the end of today’s post, a few more-so familiar friends, so make sure you read all the way down!!

Okay, dig in!!!

Yarn Update: Merino Nylon Sock!

Hiya,

Okay, so as I type, most of the available indigodragonfly stock is winging its way to the Left Coast for the (insert shameless self-promoting plug here) Knit City show in Vancouver on Oct. 13 & 14, but one of the kids decided to stay home, feigning (I suspect) a case of Consumption, Bubonic Plague or, as usual, The Scurvy. I personally think it’s just a Fear Of Flying…

Anyway, as we couldn’t leave the cupboards completely bare, we kept back a fine stash of Merino Nylon Stock…all for youse!

Sooo….Enjoy!
