Caulfield

I’m so thrilled to introduce you to Caulfield, a new sweater pattern from Amy Herzog.

We developed the Bunnies, Bunnies!  It Must Be Bunnies! colourway especially for this design, with input from Amy. She wanted something from the Buffy-verse, sent us the idea for the name and we went to work from there.  There were some surprises on the way…we THOUGHT the colour would come out as a medium grey with just a touch of purple lowlights…and this is the colour that emerged from the pots: a soft, smokey plum with just a little brightness behind it.  Actually even better than what was intended.  I love it when that happens!

(As a tangent, soon afterwards an actual bunny started hanging out in our yard. Coincidence?)

The tank is knit with Hootenanny (Well It’s Chock Full of Hoot, Just a Little Bit of Nanny), one of our classic Buffy colours.  It’s Oz. Non-chalant. Unflappable. You know, until the full moon hits.

We’ve watched this design develop from a seed of an idea to sketches to seeing parts of it knit up.  The stitch pattern is beautifully textured and complex looking.  But it’s actually quite simple to memorize and knit.  Seriously, I witnessed Amy knit it while carrying on intelligent conversation and eating lunch. And she’s worked out charts for the shaping increases and decreases that are nothing short of genius.  Near invisible, with a subtle shift in the stitch pattern.  It’s a thing of beauty.

The cardigan is first on my list to knit.  This is exactly the kind of sweater I wear everywhere. Easy to wear, easy to dress up or down. Amy used MCS Sock in Bunnies, Bunnies! It Must Be Bunnies! which creates a soft, drapey fabric that skims the body.  The tank, knit with Merino Sock in Hootenanny (Well It’s Chock Full of Hoot, Just a Little Bit of Nanny) creates a more open version of the lace pattern.  This pattern is a “Frankensweater” of sorts.  Mix and match necklines, sweater styles and sleeve lengths to create your perfect silhouette.  In other words, make a sweater that fits and suits YOU.

We have fired up the dye pots and are dyeing up yarn for both styles.  Wait for yarn to come into the shop (we anticipate early next week), or custom order your yarn!  Just let us know which colour, and which base you’d prefer (MCS Sock or Merino Sock).  Want to use another of our bases but aren’t sure whether it will work or not?  Just ask and we’ll let you know what you can expect from our other bases.

Yarn packs:
MCS Sock – $29 per skein
Merino Sock – $24 per skein

You can purchase the pattern here on Ravelry to have it in your library, or directly from us as a PDF.

To purchase any of the above yarn, please send me an email at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca (replace AT with “@”, no spaces) indicating which colours(s) you would like, where you live and whether you want it shipped surface or air mail. First email request for each yarn/fibre secures it. I will send you a paypal invoice for the full amount plus shipping and ship the packages off within 3-5 days. Shipping charges to the US will start at $5.97 for surface mail and $7.61 for air mail. Canada Post doesn’t make shipping charges for Canadian or International packages easy, so a shipping quote will be sent as part of your invoice for your approval. You are welcome to cancel the order at that time. Best attempts are made to photograph colours accurately, however colours do differ from monitor to monitor (I’ve checked). I’ve also described the colours…and hope that helps. Custom orders (including dyeing or overdyeing your own fibre or yarn) are always welcomed! Just email me with what you have in mind.

All Bow To The Mighty Mighty Caroline!

True Random Number Generator.

Say Hello.

18. A dozen and a half. The number of holes on a regulation golf course. Jim McKenny’s Toronto Maple Leaf jersey number. The Number Of The Beast (well, sort of… 6+6+6)

Also, the 18th comment on our TARDIS Experimental yarn base contest, and that comment belonged to…Caroline!

In lieu of an all expense-paid trip to the Swiss Alps, Caroline will receive the much-coveted Mystery TARDIS Skein, a trophy she is sure to hold on high, thrust towards the sky and face down the Cosmos with its awesomenity, all the while mocking the Gods themselves with their oh-so-puny that’s-all-u-got immortality.

Yeah, yarn pretty.

Who’s Our Next Contestant?

***PLEASE NOTE: The deadline for this contest was Friday July 13 – Thank you for your comments!!!***

This is TARDIS.

Everybody say hello to TARDIS.

What’s that you say? You’ve seen TARDIS before?

Not this TARDIS.

Every now and then, our yarn suppliers send us a new fun yarn to dye up, play with, poke with pointy sticks and otherwise subject to the Praise/Mock Scale. And such is the case with TARDIS.

Now this TARDIS is 400 yards & 100 g, and is a Merino/Nylon/Cashmere blend, and is Superwash. (Please Note: This is in no way related to the left-handed South Polwarth yarn. Really.)

Now this is where you come in!

What we’re looking for is a minion/brave soul/guinea pig to commit to inviting TARDIS into your home, to knit up something pretty with it. And all you have to do is the following:

By responding to this post by hitting the REPLY button, describe in one sentence only what you’re going to knit and why you’re the most deserving minion to receive the TARDIS. This will start immediately (well, as soon as you’ve read this) and will run until 12 Noon on Friday July 13, Eastern Standard Time, at which time we’ll put our collective noggins together and choose the winning entry by Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock (or names in a big Cat-In-The-Hat hat).

But wait – there are expectations!

Since this is a test skein and will be sent to you free of charge (not even postage!), we will require input from you on how the yarn knits up, and photos of your progress. Ideally, since this is a one-skein promotion, we’d like to have a final report with photos of the finished project by August 31.

Okay, so that’s the deal. Now think hard, be creative in your proposals (and bribery!), and let us know why you’re a superstar!

TARDIS.

Pretty.

New.

Nom.

Nom.

“Colour Space is Infinite”

Here’s what you missed this week in Dyeing to Design at the Haliburton School of The Arts.

Dyeing colour pyramids
UntitledUntitledUntitled

Kim may have borrowed one of the cakes from the last one. Not me-Kim…the other Kim. And yes, that did get confusing. 😉

Making mini-skeins of every. single. colour.
Untitled

Note from the class: if you overachieve and want to dye 3 pyramids instead of 1, you WILL have to wind off THREE TIMES as many colour samples. That may get old and bring you ALMOST to the point of complaining, stamping feet and rolling eyes. Until you get to THAT colour…you know the one. Then it allllll goes away.

See?
I think Kim likes her yarn...

Speaking of overachieving:

Claire’s souvenir yarn, based on the colours of the frog she saw that morning

For those following the Unified Theory of Muppet Types (Order Muppet vs. Chaos Muppet), M insists that she is a totally different muppet type:

The many faces of Holly:
“Look! I made yarn!”
Holly wants to be on the blog. What do you think?
“Ohhhhh…you told me something kind of sad cute sad cute…sad? cute?”
Untitled
“FINISHED!!!”
I lied. Some people DO finish their project...

Trying on the new dye jobs
Elves?

That’s Caitie on the right. That is also Caitie’s sad face. Seriously. She spent the whole week practically bursting out of her skin like an excited 5 year old told they can have ice cream for every meal for a week.

All the yarn and knitting
UntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitled

Oh. And an aquatic giraffe.
Untitled

And just in case you wanted to know how many colour pyramids we could have created…
Untitled

…the final answer was…well, actually, I forget. But when our intrepid mathematicians were asked to figure out how many colours we could make by mixing combinations of the colours we had mixed, one may have been heard to sigh…

“Colour space is infinite!”
