Winter, Friends & Sneakiness

Last weekend was our 3rd annual weekend of dragging some of my best knitting friends to the north for a weekend of knitting, rolling around in yarn and general hanging out.

Not much changes from year to year.

Plates of food randomly appear:

It’s truly my favourite weekend of the year.

This year, my friends were sneaky.  Ron and I were presented with an early wedding present, several months in the making:

DSC_0026

Now, I’ve been a part of several community blankets for various knit night friends.  Knitting squares or strips or rounds…part of many hands making something full of love and good wishes. The knitting is a very special experience, especially knowing that the blanket is going to another knitter who will truly appreciate the time and work gone into it.

But to get a dyer to UNKNOWINGLY dye the yarn for her own blanket?? To choose the colours right in front of her face, send a minion to order the yarn, get some of the colours custom dyed (and scrutinized to make sure the skeins were JUST RIGHT for that particular minion) and hand delivered in a Mission Impossible/Spy vs. Spy mash-up style exchange?? On top of the winding and knitting and sewing and transporting? That takes a level of espionage, sneakiness and full-throttle smart-assery of the highest order.  Well played my friends, well played.

You also have to love it that they also presented me with a “Making of…” video:

Yarn Update: Feb. 22, 2012

Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination update!  There are less than 20 spaces left in the club, so snag yours now!  Spaces are going really quickly this year…less than 48 hours to fill spots that took over 2 months to fill last year.

So really?  We’re not kidding.

Now a word from Ron, your resident dyeing-yarn-skeiner:

Some new stuffs to ponder – Feel free to add to yer cart!

To purchase any of the above yarn, please send me an email at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca (replace AT with “@”, no spaces) indicating which colours(s) you would like, where you live and whether you want it shipped surface or air mail. First email request for each yarn/fibre secures it. I will send you a paypal invoice for the full amount plus shipping and ship the packages off within 3-5 days. Shipping charges to the US will start at $5.97 for surface mail and $7.61 for air mail. Canada Post doesn’t make shipping charges for Canadian or International packages easy, so I will send you a shipping quote for your order for your approval. Best attempts are made to photograph colours accurately, however colours do differ from monitor to monitor (I’ve checked). I’ve also described the colours…and hope that helps. Custom orders (including dyeing or overdyeing your own fibre or yarn) are always welcomed! Just email me with what you have in mind.

So Sometimes I Teach…and Talk…

I have some teaching and talking events coming up that I thought you should know about.

In March, I’ll be teaching 2 classes at Shall We Knit in Waterloo ON.

Saturday March 10 – Why Did the Unicorn Cross the Road?: Creating Personal Colourwork (material fee includes lots of colour samples to swatch and play with and all design materials)

Sunday March 11 – Cliffs of Insanity: Taking a Leap With Your Knitting (“kit fee” includes several different yarn bases to play with, but does not include yarn to make a full Cliffs of Insanity scarf. You’re free to bring your own yarn to play with, but our yarns and a full store of Shall We Knit yarns will also be available to purchase)

Both classes are about being creative in your knitting.  Learning about colour so you can use it and combine colours confidently.  Learning how to chart a pattern that’s uniquely yours.  Learning to improvise without second guessing yourself. Knitting is your hobby…your fun.

Also?  I have pencil crayons.  It’s colouring.  For grown ups.  With yarn.

Here’s how I like to teach:  I like to give very broad class descriptions, with lots of possibilities and lots of options.  When I do that, I get students of all different levels and experiences who get to choose what it is they’d like to focus on.  Some will walk away from class with a bag of samples that will help them take the next step.  Others will choose to focus their day in one direction, and will have the start of a larger project on their needles.  Everyone will leave with something new running through their brains.

You can register for these classes on the Shall We Knit website here.

And then on Tuesday March 13, I’ll be speaking at the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitter’s Guild meeting.  My subject?  This is going to shock you.  Really.  Are you sitting down?  You need to be sitting down.

Knitting and sarcasm.

Clearly the days of the Guild taking me seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

You must ensure that your mailing address in PayPal is correct.  If you move at any point between June 1, 2012 and April 15, 2013, please inform us of your address change as soon as possible both by changing your address in PayPal and by emailing us with your new address.  We must have your new address at least 10 days prior to a Club shipment to ensure it is sent to the correct address. FAQ

What is this?
A yarn club with patterns and artisan swag. Each package will contain 1 skein of Indigodragonfly yarn, a pattern for that yarn and swag (usually knitting related and always handmade by artisans).  In at least 1 case, the swag will part of the project intended for that month’s yarn.

How many packages/how long is the commitment?
Packages will arrive every 2 months, so you’ll receive 6 packages if you sign up for the 1 year club, and 3 packages if you sign up for the 6 month club.  You can opt to pay monthly, or pay for the whole club at once.

When do payments start?
The Club will be open for subscriptions starting on February 14, 2012 and will be open until April 14, 2012 (or when we’ve reached our full capacity) You can subscribe through Paypal right here on my blog.

When do shipments start?

June 15 will be the first shipment. Shipments will follow every second month on the 15th of the month until April 2013 for 1 year club members, or October 2012 for 6 month club members.

Why start sign ups so early?

This gives us time to plan and make sure our artisans have enough time to make swag for us, and that our suppliers have enough time to get us the quantities of yarn we need for you.  Also, Kim hates Valentine’s Day and this is a way to make sure something fun happens on this day every year.  Don’t worry, we have plenty of fun planned while you wait.

Who are the designers?
It’s a surprise!  All designers have been chosen because we love their designs.  We know you will too.  This year’s crop of designers are all new, but if you want a peek at past designers, here are some of them… Amy DuncanStephannie RoyKate Atherley and GlennaC.

Will you ship to Canada?

Yes! I live here, so there will definitely be shipping to Canada. In fact, the prices I’ve quoted you for the Club include shipping.

Is this a sock club? Are non-sock knitters welcome?
First of all, EVERYONE is welcome. The only requirement is that you have a sense of humour and are not easily offended. There will be a variety of projects throughout this Club. I like to knit different things and like variety…so that’s what you’re getting.

If you have further questions, feel free to email us directly at orders AT indigodragonfly DOT com, or comment on this page.

They seem to think we can be distracted with this:

Um. HELP!

Progress, Pairings & Club: A Random, Not-so-Random Monday Post

1) Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination Club sign-ups start at 1 minute after midnight Eastern (Toronto/New York time). (I feel like I should say “today”, when it’s really “tomorrow” and no matter which one I choose, someone will also be confused.  And I will feel bad.  So suffice it to say tonight it will be 11:59 and sign ups will not be open…then 2 minutes later they will.)

2) Yes, I fully realize that I could make this so much easier on all of us if I just started at 7 am or noon. But the idea was to use up ALL of Valentine’s Day with the cool thing. And face it: you love these rambley, quirky posts. They totally make you feel more normal, don’t they? Besides, we get infinite amusement out of waiting till 1 minute after midnight to see who stayed up late to sign up.  We make popcorn and everything.

3) You.  That one person about to point out in the comments that “ALL of Valentine’s Day” is not actually filled up with the cool thing (yes, I know who you are)…refrain. I mean it.  There will be dire consequences.

4) I’ve made some progress on my stripey knee socks:

DSCN0845

And they are a perfect fit! They hug my leg just right and curve perfectly down my calf. Glenna’s a genius.

5) Carla in our Ravelry group mentioned making fitted leg warmers using Glenna’s worksheet, which I think would be brilliant.

6) The hazards of naming yarn colourways after your friends: if Glenna gets paired with another colourway, Stephannie wants a yarny boyfriend too.

So…

Steph and weird geeky record store guy…
Paging Dr. Smart-AssIs She All Green and Fuzzy and Mossy? (High Fidelity Series)

Steph and Oz (which personality-wise, might just work)
Paging Dr. Smart-AssHootenanny: It's Chock Full of Hoot, Just a Little Bit of Nanny

Steph and Jack Black
Paging Dr. Smart-AssSonic F$#*ing Death Monkey (High Fidelity series)

Steph and Scott Pilgrim
Paging Dr. Smart-AssYou Punched the Highlights Out of Her Hair!

(I’m thinking Scott Pilgrim. Steph takes over the world…Scott saves the world… yet in true Steph fashion, she wants them all. Which would also kinda work…in that blinding, astigmatism test way)

And I suppose that also means that Bridget (AKA Crack Baby…which really only makes sense if you’ve seen this…otherwise we just sound mean)

Bridget and Bridget
What The Hay?!Also, I Can Kill You With My Brain. (River)
(or technically What the Hay?! and Needles in the Brain…which we didn’t have a picture of but just picture Also I Can Kill You With My Brain with NO plum or green undertones. Or, you know, Bridget and River would also be awesome.)

Bridget and TARDIS
What The Hay?!TARDIS

Or Bridget and Lorne, the Host
What The Hay?!Well Put Me On The Short Bus And Send Me Off To Clueless School (Lorne The Host)

So clearly Bridget is destined for a life with demons, time machines and mind-controlled killing machines. But, you know, PRETTY!

7) Meanwhile, the Rav group has been hard at work in this thread coming up with excellent colour combos.

There is concern that Xander won’t work with Anya or Cordelia. Well let’s take a look:

Is The Money Okay? Did They Hurt The Money? (Anya)I've Never Been Up With People Before

Don't You Have an Elsewhere to Be? (Cordelia)I've Never Been Up With People Before

Because I’ve Never Been Up With People Before (Xander’s colourway) is so variable, I think a version that had more dark grey/black could work well with both Anya and Cordelia. I’d recommend trying combinations of stripes with different widths to make sure you like the balance.  Both of these could be lots of fun.

Cordelia (Don’t You Have an Elsewhere to Be) and Between Love and Batteries is another combo bringing out the inner 12 year old in our Rav group.

Don't You Have an Elsewhere to Be? (Cordelia)Between Love and Batteries

Now these will make a nice subtle stripe which I actually like a lot. If you wanted something more dramatic with these two, adding a line of black or charcoal grey between stripes would do it!

My person favourite so far?

TARDIS and Tight Pants
TARDISCaptain Tight Pants

Really love that blue and brown combination. I’m thinking stripey sweater.

Twisted Relationships: A Valentine’s Love Story

It’s no secret what my least favourite holiday is. Bad things have happened to me on just about every Valentine’s Day of my life. The day a break-up is least likely to happen? Check. Hardcore porno valentine email from ex-boyfriend who thought it was “romantic”? Check! First date with the person who made it necessary to add “Have you ever been imprisoned for killing ethnic Albanians?” to my list of first date questions? Check!!

Seriously, it’s a lot of pressure for 1 poor day.

Which is why sign ups for the Smart-Ass Knitters Club start on Valentine’s Day. I made 1 really positive thing happen. Positive for me. (You like me. You really really like me!) And positive for smart-ass knitters with a penchant for world domination everywhere.

But believe it or not, the Club is NOT what this post is about.

This post is about relationships. Colour relationships. And colour name relationships. Twisted ones.

Glenna designed some striped knee high socks a few years ago, and has since been teachinghow to make custom knee highs at some local yarn stores in Ontario. I asked her if she would write a pattern for us, and what she came back with is Knee Socks For Everyone Or, the “Amazing Wonderful Do-It Yourself Knee Socks Worksheet Complete with Tips on Fit and Shaping”, an amazing worksheet that will help you make perfectly fitting knee socks just for you!

Striped knee highs are fun. Striped knee highs, with colours that already have attitude and personalities of their own? Insanely, cackle-inducing, snickering-to-yourself-on-the-streetcar FUN!!

Want proof?

Here are mine:

Know who it is? Mal and Inara. Making kissy noises on my needles. (you have Glenna to thank for that mental image. Glenna is 10 years old, watching Love Boat reruns with my Grandma). I’m varying the width of the stripes in mine, because I can. And because I like a little improv in my knitting.

We will be custom dyeing kits for your own striped knee highs. One skein of each colour is enough for calves under 15″ in circumference. If your calves are over 15″ in circumference, you may need 2 skeins of each colour. Just let us know what colours, what yarn base (merino sock, merino nylon sock and MCN sock work best for these) and how much you need. We’ll add Glenna’s Knee Socks for Everyone PDF for $6. Kits will ship out within 2 weeks of ordering. To order, email us at orders AT indigodragonfly.ca.

Oh. One last one.

Just Knitting

Last weekend we headed off to Just Knitting for a trunk show. Just Knitting is in Carleton Place Ontario, just outside of Ottawa…definitely worth the trip if you’re in the Ottawa area. It took us just over half an hour to get there from downtown Ottawa. It’s on the ground floor of a beautiful little Victorian, which means it has all those lovely old house details like beautiful hardwood floors…

(this photo was not at all taken by my knee as the camera was swinging around. That would never, ever happen.)

Kelly’s store is filled with hand-dyed yarn and fibre, spinning wheels, spindles, yarn bowls and there may just have been a bowl of handmade glass buttons that I perhaps played with for the better part of the day.

We’re still new enough at this trunk show thing that we don’t know exactly what to expect.  But as long as store owners are crazy KIND enough to let us invade and take over their space, we’re in!

And take over, we did:

Even the spinning wheels had to move over.

Look at Kelly and I, so calm and peaceful and innocent on a Saturday morning…

Yeah…this happened about 10 minutes later:

And didn’t really stop all day:

Kelly’s regular knitters are a blast.

And for those of you who are regulars on the Ravelry Boards, that’s Jenn (jgd) and Kim (kpotr) on the right. If I lived closer to these two, there would be reason to be VERY afraid…

Natalie was wearing a shawl she’s designed with our Merino Silk Lace (though it would also be amazing in Merino Single Lace:

(as soon as the design is published, I’ll let you know. This one was barely off the needles!)

And of course, the obligatory “I’ll take a photo of you taking a photo of me taking a photo of you”.

(Actually, this was try #4…turns out giggling results in blurry photos. Who knew?)

A very fun day with wonderful people. Definitely a place I would spend a lot of time in if I lived closer. We’ll be back soon.
