Like this:

Stage Door Cardigan/Polworth Silkl

Pattern: Stage Door Cardigan by Glenna C
Yarn: Indigodragonfly DK Polworth Silk in Also, I Can Kill You With My Brain

Pattern available directly from Glenna through Ravelry or on her blog. Pattern and yarn available from us!

Stage Door Cardigan/Polworth Silkl

Glenna designed this for us back in September, and I’m thrilled with it. Although I went full-on rebel on her and didn’t make it with the yarn it was designed for. I know. I’m sure there will be punishment. I made one modification at Glenna’s suggestion: I shortened the pattern repeat length from the hem to the waist. Cause, you know, when the designer is twice your height… 😉

The colour is a Firefly inspired colour. In this case, I dyed the colour first…soft plums and purples strongly overdyed with a medium grey…and then was reminded of the quote. Brains…grey matter…and besides, who DOESN’T want to name something Also, I Can Kill You With My Brain?

New yarn!

(Note the brain-ish texture)

Recommended wearing: Around difficult people.

And then there was this:
Reunion Cowl/merino cashmere

Pattern: Reunion Cowl by Natalie Selles/leeleetea
Yarn: Indigodragonfly Merino Cashmere in Rachel H’s Tiara

Pattern available directly from Natalie through Ravelry, and as a kit from us! We’re finding that a lot of people are choosing different yarns to make this with…we can help you find one that works for you.

Reunion Cowl/merino cashmere

I decided to make the large size and use a different yarn than the one Natalie redesigned it with for us. Yeah, I know. Totally blindsided you. Couldn’t see THAT coming! My gauge was off by about 1/2 a stitch or so and the cowl ended up being super-huge. Like, “I can live in it” huge. Much larger than intended.

Reunion Cowl/merino cashmere

And I don’t care. It’s big and wrappy and warm and cozy and snuggly and soft and LIGHT. It was a long knit that never seemed to get boring. Caveat: at the time of knitting it, I was looking for something brainless that I could just knit and knit and knit and not really have to think about (other than counting rows once in a while to make sure I wasn’t knitting the Holland Tunnel). I wear it all the time and wrap it in all kinds of ways. A fun fun piece to have in your wardrobe.

Reunion Cowl/merino cashmere

But I think I need to knit a smaller large one too. Just saying.

Recommended wearing: everywhere.

Also, this:
Cassis/MCN Sport

Pattern: Cassis by Thea Coleman/babycocktails
Yarn: Indigodragonfly MCN Sport in Grrr…Arg.

Cassis/MCN Sport

I saw this on Thea when I met her at the Ravelry Rhinebeck party in October. And pretty much stalked her until the pattern was posted. Although I tried dyeing other colours for it, only a deep, dark purple would work. And since we’ve been wanting to name a colour Grrr…Arg. for a while now…and I believe I may have uttered those words while trying to get the colour just right…

Cassis/MCN Sport

The vertical lines of this lace (also echoed in the lower back of the sweater) are very flattering.

Recommended wearing: This is a great layering piece. I wasn’t sure I’d like the shorter sleeves, but I find it to be the perfect layer of warmth in my cold office. Definitely see this as a great 3 season piece as well…taking me from fall through cold winters and into early spring.

New This Year…Allergy Free

So have we mentioned that sign ups have started for the Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination Club?  I’m sure we must have, once or twice.

But what you don’t know and should is that we want to be able to accomodate as many knitters as possible.  Including those with fibre allergies.  I have a number of friends with animal fibre allergies, so we are always on the lookout for yarns that they can use.  Are you one of those people?  Want to join the Club, but are concerned you won’t be able to use the yarn we choose?

Email us.

Now.

Let’s talk.  We’ll come up with a set of yarns that will work for you and work out a special club price for you.

For the rest of you, the club is filling up quickly!  Just over a week of sign ups and we’re half-way to capacity.  Once those spots are gone, they’re gone, so grab them while you can.

Blog Post:

Remember the Otis Houndation?  To recap, we’ve put aside $1 from every skein sold since July 2010 AND all money collected to wind yarn into cakes…this is the Otis Houndation.

Well, we wanted to give you an update.  So far, in the past 6 months, we’ve used the money for some sponsorships.  We (and by that, I mean every one of you who has bought yarn since July) sponsored the Ravelry Party at Rhinebeck and the Arts Council~Haliburton Highlands.  We’re sponsoring the upcoming Winter Folk Camp, a weekend folk and roots music retreat (which, if you love to play music and can make the trip, you should seriously consider attending!)

Deep in my heart of hearts, the one thing I was hoping we would be able to do with the Otis Houndation is to help artists when they need it most.  A few weeks ago, Kathleen Atkinson-Hindle‘s studio was broken into, and several pieces of expensive equipment were stolen.  Kathleen is one of our fellow Art Hive members and you may recall that she is the person who made my engagement ring. In her words, it’s “one thing to steal someone’s possessions…it’s another thing to steal their livelihood.”  So we were able to give Kathleen a donation to help her making beautiful things again as quickly as possible.

So I’m sorry to say we had an opportunity to use Otis’s money for the exact purpose it was intended for.  But I’m thrilled to say we were able to help exactly when it was needed.

Thank you all for that.

Mo’ Merino Sock!

What with all the posts these past few weeks about kits, baby pictures, yarn cakes and whatnot, we thought it might not be a bad idea to bring a bit o’ new stock on-line, so here ye be…

What we’ve cooked up is some new (and a few old fave) colourways for our Merino Sock collection, so enjoy!

Merino Sock: 100% Superwash Merino 2 ply sock yarn – 390 yds/100g skein – $22

A goodly length, and a great price!

First email request for each yarn/fibre/project bag/pottery item/pattern secures it. I will send you a paypal invoice for the full amount plus shipping and ship the packages off within 3-5 days. Please note that skeins wound into cakes cannot be returned. Shipping charges to the US will start at $5.44 for surface mail and $7.70 for air mail. Canada Post doesn’t make shipping charges for Canadian or International packages easy, so I will send you a shipping quote for your order for your approval.

Best attempts are made to photograph colours accurately, however colours do differ from monitor to monitor (I’ve checked). I’ve also described the colours…and hope that helps. Custom orders (including dyeing or overdyeing your own fibre or yarn) are always welcomed! Just email me with what you have in mind.

Can I Keep Them?

Sign up for the Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination Club!

I live in my favourite place in the world.  It took a long time to get here…to figure out what we needed to do to live here.  And it was worth it.  I wake up every morning, in every season, to beauty…everywhere I look.

But I do miss my friends in Toronto.  So every year (OK, 2 so far, but I don’t see this ending) a small group of friends make the trek north in the dead of winter to see me.  Seriously.  Not in the summer, when the roads are clear.  They wait till it’s -30° C and the weather network is throwing around phrases like “flash freezing warning”. I know we like wool and everything, but THAT’S friendship.

This is Anastasia.

Retreat

She brought us cake, made by her cousin at Good to the Last Crumb.   That blur behind her? Stephannie racing to the cake.

Retreat

And not just any cake…YARN CAKE!  With a pattern.  Which we ate.  All of it.  No, you can’t have some.

We got to roll around in Glenna’s Midnight Collection samples:

Retreat

What’s even more amazing is that the samples were out romping around with her carrot cupcakes a hair’s breath away. Brave woman, that.

We moved right in to the house we rented and sprawled across every spare bit of space.

Before:

After:

Retreat

Getting up occasionally to cook:

Retreat

(I love Martha because she brought me purple carrots. PURPLE!)

And we knit.

Retreat

While introducing the uninitiated to Firefly and Buffy. (Though I somehow managed to dodge Dr. Who again…and I wasn’t even trying to!)

The Boy helped me bring over a little yarn. Two carloads full. So there was some very organized and well thought out hoarding:

Retreat 2011

And more food:

Retreat

“Drizzle the cream ARTISTICALLY”, were the instructions.

We entertained Little Miss Lambie Toes…

Retreat

Why yes, that IS a demon on the TV. Children’s Aid is SO going to be after us. And yes, that IS a world famous knitwear designer making faces at the munchkin. The extent some people will go to to avoid designing an entire Firefly-based sock collection in one weekend…

Really, this post should be all about the child:

Retreat

“Mummy, this is MY stash…YOUR stash is purple.”

This year, this was more than a retreat to me. It was a milestone. At last year’s retreat, our entire stock fit into 2 plastic tubs. This year, we couldn’t bring it all. A year ago I was certain that no one would ever buy our yarn ever again. And this group of women encouraged me, made me laugh and told me I was crazy. They told me they had it all figured out and all I had to do was make beautiful yarn. And then each one went home and did at least one little thing to help us grow. It wasn’t exactly the same group this year. It may not be the same group next year. But this weekend. This oasis of calm and laughter and flavour and colour in the middle of winter is just what I need at exactly the time I need it.

(PS:  We really REALLY missed you Sandi and Andrea and Joyce and Jen!)

This gives us time to plan and make sure our artisans have enough time to make swag for us, and that our suppliers have enough time to get us the quantities of yarn we need for you.  Also, Kim hates Valentine’s Day and this is a way to make sure something fun happens on this day every year.
