Smart-Ass Knitters: June 2013

The Yarn:

Filament o’ Squid, a new Merino/Seacell blend in Squalor Amongst the Ankles

DSC_0003

I was thinking about my childhood summer memories.  Playing hide and seek in sun-bleached fields of long grass.

Ron, on the other hand:

Some body parts are pretty. Some body parts are functional.
And then, there’s the Ankle.
The Ankle: The Zircon of the Gem World.
The Ankle: The French Fry of International Cuisine.
The Ankle: The Frisbee Golf of Sports.
Isn’t it about time the Ankle was given its due?
Squalor Amongst The Ankles. Feel the love!

The Designers:

This year the Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination 1 Skein Club is offering 2 patterns with every Club package.

I love all the details in these socks.  The leaves and vines climbing up the leg. The way the design flows down onto the foot. And this sole detail:

And these are charted for 4 sizes!

Lonicera by Sarah Wilson/The Sexy Knitter

Sarah took on the challenge of making this cowl adaptable to all seasons and climates and really stretched the possibilities of this yarn. There are 4 sizes in total, some using the yarn single stranded and some double stranded, so depending on your wardrobe needs, you can make this everything from a quick winter knit to a light summer shoulder wrap.

Both these patterns will be available for sale directly from the designers in December 2013.

Ramblings

It’s Friday. An admin day here as we busily get ready to ship Smart-Ass Knitters Club packages next week. Very soon Club members will start to see the telltale signs…the spoiler/no spoilers threads will appear in our Ravelry group…random, mysterious black and white photos will taunt them from dusty corners of the internet.  Bwahhahahahaha. Ha.

Meanwhile these are taunting ME:DSC_0007

These the last racks of yarn we’ve dyed up for Studiopalooza at Shall We Knit next weekend. We work with a lot of incredible yarn stores and yarn store owners, but Karen, Lynne and their staff at Shall We Knit have blown us away with the generosity of this event.  We’ve seen sneak previews of what you can expect from other vendors like Zigzag Stitches, Jennie the Potter and Body Blessed and you don’t want to miss this event!

For those of you who really can’t make it, we’ll be live tweeting and live posting about the event on twitter (follow: @indigodragonfly) and in our Ravelry group.  And there is always the Naming Rights Auction (bids close on June 10 at 11 pm)…

Know what else is taunting me?

This:

DSC_0011

It’s my Draper Cardigan from Fit to Flatter in Merino Silk DK in the Minden Flood Relief colourway.  I love how the colour has played out in this base. I really want to wear it RIGHT NOW. And as soon as I whip up a couple of sleeves and stitch that baby together, that’s what’s going to happen!

In other news, Southern Ontario: prepare for 45º C weather.

Meet our Club designers!

Today is officially the last day to sign up for the Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination 1 Skein Club!

Full details & sign up here       Quick sign up here

For the first time, we’re announcing some of the designers that will be creating new designs for the Club.  Handpicked and invited to design with us, these are the people that make each package a true collaboration.  The colours you receive are inspired by each designer’s idea.

We’re pretty excited about a line up that includes:

Julia Farwell-Clay’s command of texture and colour play make me swoon.  Your eye follows each line as it tells it’s story. I plan on living in Mindy next fall/winter.

Ruth Garcia-Alcantud’s (Rock and Purl) elegant, very wearable designs always have quirky details that I love.  Full of Ruth’s joyful personality!  Paseo makes me lose my mind!

Bristol Ivy shifts perception. Simple lines and fine details reveal themselves to be so much more.  I’m currently playing colour tetris for the perfect combination for Stripanan

Melissa Lemmons creates designs that don’t quit, keeping your eyes and hands happy to the very end.   I’m fairly convinced knitting Columns of Grass will finally melt the snow in my yarn.

Lynne Sosnowski never stops thinking…about how things fit, how they work and how they’ll make you feel to wear…and this shows in her designs.   She has also designed the only hat that does not make me look like a dork.  Really.

Come join us!

3) TERMS & FAQ’s

Terms:
Subscribing to the Club means that you agree to monthly payments withdrawn from your Paypal account for the duration of the Club, unless you have paid in full or have made other arrangements for payment. You must ensure that your mailing address in Paypal is correct.  If you move at any point between June 1, 2013 and April 15, 2014, please inform us of your address change as soon as possible by emailing us with your new address.  We must have your new address at least 15 days prior to a Club shipment to ensure it is sent to the correct address. There are no returns on Club memberships.  If you choose the monthly payment option and cancel your Club membership through Paypal, we will continue shipping packages until the value of your payments to date is used up. No refund will be issued for partial payments. If a monthly payment fails, we will make a reasonable attempt to contact you by email (at least two times). If payment can not be resolved at that point, we will cancel your participation in the club and no refund will be made for partial club shipments. (for example, if you are paid up for the June shipment, but not for August, we will ship the June package but hold the August package until full payment is received). If you discover an issue with your Pay Pal account, please contact us and we will work with you to resolve your account with us. You assume responsibility for packages delivered to the wrong address, if your address is incorrect in PayPal, if you have sent us the wrong address by email or if you have not given us sufficient notice (minimum 15 days prior to a Club shipment date) to change your address in our system.

FAQ

What is this?
A yarn club with patterns and options! Each package will contain 1 skein of indigodragonfly yarn and 2 patterns for that yarn.  Colourways are exclusive to Club members only and will never be available to the general public.  Packages will be shipped every second month, around the 15th of the month.

How many packages/how long is the commitment?
Packages will arrive every 2 months, so you’ll receive 6 packages if you sign up for the 1 year club, and 3 packages if you sign up for the 6 month club.  You can opt to pay monthly, or pay for the whole club at once at a significant discount (20% off the base price of the Club).  Packages will ship around the 15th of the shipment month.

When do payments start?
The Club will be open for subscriptions starting on February 14, 2013 and will be open until April 14, 2013 (or when we’ve reached our full capacity) You can subscribe through Paypal right here on this page.

When do shipments start?

June 15 will be the first shipment. Shipments will follow every second month on the 15th of the month until April 2014 for 1 year club members, or October 2013 for 6 month club members.

Who are the designers?
It’s a surprise!  All designers have been chosen because we love their designs.  We know you will too.  Past designers have been Laura Nelkin, Kate Atherley, Meghan Jackson, Deb Barnhill and Stephannie Roy.

Will you ship to Canada?
Yes! I live here, so there will definitely be shipping to Canada. In fact, the prices quoted for the Club include shipping.

Is this a sock club? Are non-sock knitters welcome?
First of all, EVERYONE is welcome. The only requirement is that you have a sense of humour and are not easily offended. There will be a variety of projects throughout this Club. I like to knit different things and like variety…so that’s what you’re getting.

If you have further questions, feel free to email us directly at orders AT indigodragonfly.com.

On Thursday, Cooperative Press posted a blog post about Anna Dalvi and her work, with this teaser photo of pieces she’s working on for her next book:

Tell us which of these pieces is knit with Indigodragonfly yarn, and name the yarn base(s), the colourway(s) and guess how many skeins I gave Anna  to design with. Leave a comment on this post. All correct answers will be eligible to win!  (And hey, why not tell us which of Anna’s shawls is your favourite and which Cooperative Press book NEEDS to be in your library)

The Prizes!

  • Anna Dalvi will send the winner a subscription to her Huldran Mystery KAL (I do believe this will become my knitting for my newfound Grimm/Once Upon a Time obsession…)
  • And yes, there is yarn.  A regular sized (around 100-115 g) skein of your choice. Might I suggest a little something to go along with item A or B?
Contest closes Wednesday November 16 at 11:59 pm

Pattern Release: #^@& You Mitts

Remember these?

The #^@& You Mitts! (or the uncensored “Fuck You”)

Fingerless mitts.  Each one with a different design to eliminate “second sock” syndrome. Pay close attention to the subversive cable design.  It’s all kinds of awesome.

Suitable for intermediate knitters.

The pattern is now up for sale! You can buy PDF or hard copies directly from us (email us, and we’ll send you an invoice) right now.  Please indicate whether you want the tame or the less tame version. ;)  The pattern will also be available through Ravelry soon.

You can also buy kits from us. Custom order the original cashmere for $43 (includes 1 skein of cashmere + PDF pattern), in any of these colours. (ships within 3 weeks) Or try the mitts in MCN Sport for $32! (includes 1 skein of MCN Sport + PDF pattern)

August Club Package

Sign-ups for the next wave of Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination Club shipments (December, February and April) are now open! More information and sign-up links are here.

On the day we’re sending out the October Club package, here’s a post about August!

I’m just going to let these speak for themselves with relatively little sarcastic commentary.  I know you’ve come to expect that behaviour.

The Yarn:  MCN Sock in Just Like Mom Used to Kill

The Pattern:  Charee by Jaya Purswani

Copyright 2011: Jaya Purswani

So it turns out that Charee is Hindi for crazy.

In Jaya’s words:

Family is great, except that they always manage to drive you “charee” (Hindi for crazy)

These socks are guaranteed to help you maintain a semblance of your sanity – some twisted stitches to destract and give you a reason to stay silent; and ribbing to let you join in on the conversation.

The Artisan: Buttons by Erin Lynch

DSC_0005

Erin, a local jewellery artist, came to me with an idea for funky little buttons to dress up your fun knits. Yes, I know, socks don’t have buttons (well, these ones don’t…), but we like them anyway, so here you go!

Erin’s also started a blog: http://bellasbazaar.wordpress.com/about/. Let’s all freak her out and comment on it. ;)

June Club Package: So Hip It Hurts

This post has been delayed by postal strikes, heatwaves, dyeing in heatwaves, a little Sock Summit thingie, supplier issues and a doomed unicorn. Sorry about that. (OK, maybe not so sorry about the unicorn.)

The Colourway: Hungry Hungry Hipster
The name Hungry Hungry Hipsters came from loyal minion Keri.
Though she really had no idea WHAT the colour should be, just thought it was a cool name. So it was filed away in the back of my brain.

Until Amy Duncan tweeted wayyyyyy back in February that she was mentally designing a hat pattern in her head on the bus:

The Pattern: Ironic Hipster is Ironic

SO! When 2 great ideas come together, you get a June Club package.

Colours that represent the broody, over important versions of the popular 1970’s game Hungry Hungry Hippos (which I was never allowed to own and had to sneak over to friends’ houses to play)

We took advantage of the dark natural colour of the Bam Yak yarn and overdyed it with super saturated brights. The Nut Free silk was dyed
twice to get a similar effect, although the colours less subdued. 4
colours, named after the Hippos themselves (you didn’t know they had names, did you?):

plum – Lizzie teal – Homer rust – Henry brown – Harry

JUNE CLUB PACKAGE

For those with allergies to animal fibers, we sent out a lovely silk single that took the colour much more vibrantly:

JUNE CLUB PACKAGE

Two colours, in any combination are used in the pattern. See how well Homer and Lizzie play together?

JUNE CLUB PACKAGE

The pattern? A slouchy hat that makes you too cool and hip to care. Just by knitting it.

Ironic 4

I love this little cut out in the back:

Ironic 1 (Copyright Amy Duncan, 2012)

The Artisan: Sandi Luck

Sandi loves colour even more than we do. She is a multi-faceted textile artist and fellow member of the Art Hive Maple Lake Artisan’s Collective.

We conned her into making these little felted bowls for us, after I got one for Christmas.

JUNE CLUB PACKAGE

These bowls are just a tiny sample of the work she does, using bright, saturated colours and rich fibres and fabrics to make wraps, belts, cuffs, wall hangings and tuffets that Miss Muffet would be thrilled to have.

But really, just look at these colours:

JUNE CLUB PACKAGE

(I’m told there are bits and pieces of Indigodragonfly in some of these…see if you can pick them out)

JUNE CLUB PACKAGE

April Club Package: Minions, Minions, Minions

Spoiler warning:  If you have not received your April Club package yet, and want to be surprised, do not read any further…also, you should probably email us because there is a good chance your package ran away to join the circus.  And we should probably try to convince it that life as an accountant is really the better choice.

This package may as well be called “Minions, Minions, Minions”.  Every part of this package made me jump up and down with glee.

The Colourway: Now Accepting Applications for Minions.

Susan and I have a mutual friend.  That mutual friend has a precocious youngster.  Precocious in the good, all-of-you-will-bend-to-my-will, I-refuse-to-conform-and-you-know-you-like-it kind of way.  She’s kind of my hero.  So when our mutual friend told us that her child came to breakfast one day saying she needed some minions, “Now Accepting Applications for Minions” NEEDED to become a colourway.  And Susan was the perfect designer to design something for it.

Charcoal grey – the colour of minions
Chocolate brown –  for the, well, brown-nosing
White – minionly pointy teeth
Teal – the colour of ennui (we all knew that, right?), or perhaps minion blood.

The Pattern: Tiara, a knitsnknishes design by Susan Lutsky

Smart-Ass Knitters/World Domination Club Package - April 2011

I have to tell you, there was much giggling over international borders about this design. So much fun to collaborate!

Susan’s notes about the pattern:

Feeling underappreciated? Slip on a pair of Tiara Socks, have one of your minions pour you a glass of the bubbly and fetch you a platter of bonbons …then sit back and enjoy, and nurture your royal self! You know you deserve it! The idea for this pattern evolved out of a discussion between Kim and I about the name for this month’s colourway. ~ Who would be accepting applications for minions? Royalty! And/or those aspiring to be royal!

The Artisan: Darby Bayly, CraftyRedFox

I love Darby’s imagination.  That, and the fact that she takes my crazy ideas and takes them to a whole new level.  That was the case with this month’s swag.  I knew I wanted her to silkscreen project bags for us, with the intention of having a new design for every year of the Club.  So I told her the name of the colourway, and a few days later I got this image in my email:

© Darby Bayly

With this note:

Here is a roughly realized minion who’s brain has been replaced with yarn by it’s relentless yarn producing master.

Which made me laugh so hard that, um, it’s now my job title.

So that original sketch soon became this:

And was printed in a variety of colours:

(and perhaps on half of our wardrobe)
