Studiopalooza

If you’ve asked to be put in our dye queue lately, you’re aware that we can’t dye fast enough to keep up with you. The truth is, we need more space and more equipment to expand and be able to get your yarn to you and to your local yarn stores more quickly. One stove and one sink are no longer enough…especially on days when all four of us are working on production.

We’ve looked at a number of options and have decided the best way to move forward and grow is to build a studio right here:

 

 

We have dreams and big plans and so much in store for you.  And here’s where we want to do it.

Karen and her elves at Shall We Knit? have come up with a great idea.  Ron and I are getting married in September.  And Shall We Knit? is holding us a wedding shower to help get our studio off the ground…or on the ground…or…I think you know where we’re going with this.

On June 15, their Worldwide Knit in Public Day celebrations will also be a fundraiser for our studio, with a photo booth, draws, ask the expert, vendors and so much more.

What? You can’t come??? Well first of all, we’re very sad.  But we’ve also come up with ways you can contribute, help and generally play along and follow the action.  A yarn auction, with the dyeing live tweeted and ravelried through the event.  There’s a colour you’ve always wanted us to dye, isn’t there?  And a name you’re just dying for us to use?  This is your chance. We’ll be auctioning off naming rights for a very special set of colours. Like these and these that were created at last year’s WWKIP event. We’ll be auctioning off 4 lots starting on June 1 in our Ravelry group, with options for bidding for the right to name and dictate colours in 4 new limited edition colourways.

Rules and Guidelines:

NAMING AUCTION

There will be a total of 4 auction winners, 2 for each dyeing demo time slot (11 am, 1 pm).

All 4 Naming Auction winners will receive 1 skein of the yarn they’ve named, input into the colour’s development, a partial blog post about their colourway and its story, bragging rights (seriously…it’s all about the bragging rights) and knowing they’ve contributed to a most excellent cause.

Want more than 1 skein? We’ll take bids for naming rights + 2, 3…up to 7 skeins (full pot), but there will be reserve bids for each level, depending on the base.

Bids will open on June 1 and close on June 10 at 11:30 pm. We will take the top 4 bidders. If you’ve won, we’ll email you and confirm the colour name you want as well as any guidelines you have.

examples: if the colour is named after your child, and there’s a colour that reminds you of them, let us know; if you have a photo you’d like us to use as inspiration for the colour, send it over; if you have colour hatred, let us know that too; if you’ve decided that teal is colour of despair…who are we to judge?   

YARN AUCTION

We will be live-tweeting the dyeing demos on June 15 at Shall We Knit?.  If you want to watch, follow us on twitter:  @indigodragonfly

Once the yarn has been dyed and is hanging up to dry, we will upload photos and start separate bidding threads for each colour in our Ravelry group.  The top 7 bids for each colourway will win the skeins.  We’ll make final determinations at 3:30 pm on Saturday, after the last demo.

Mum

A year ago, I wrote this blog post.

After her funeral, my dad asked me to dye a special colourway in my mum’s honour. He had very specific colours in mind. (Those of you who know my father are cringing right now, aren’t you?) And a name.

But nothing was ever quite right.

After May 23, 2012, colour changed. How I perceive it. How I see it. How I mix it. It’s all different now. You may have noticed. Or it may be so subtle a change that only I can see it. I have no way of knowing.

I tried. A few times. In my head. In the pot.

Nothing was ever quite right.

Then in December, I asked Ron to dye me a pretty pretty blue to knit on my vacation.

And he did.

It was several weeks, months even, before I could say it out loud. This is my mum’s favourite colour, in all its subtle variations. It’s perfect. It’s hers.

I tried to come up with clever name. I was told it was my job and that there would be no Ron’ing of the name.

There isn’t a clever, funny name. It’s just Mum.

After my mum died, I heard from so many people. It was overwheming and yet the most comforting experience of my life. I haven’t known how to say thank you.

So instead, this.

This is for you if you wrote me to say you words weren’t enough. Because they were. And now when I do the same, I know mine are too.

This is for you if you told me it would come in waves. It does. And when it does, I think of you and hope you feel some of the same comfort when the waves come for you.

This is for you if you planted a hydrangea bushes in exactly this colour in honour of your mum and mine. (yes, you)

This is for you if you emailed me sketches and asked for input on your design to distract me for just a little while. It was exactly what I needed. Thank you for knowing.

If you acted as de facto food deliverers and burst into tears when you saw the colour of the casket was the same colour as my mum’s kitchen (her favourite room) and essentially kept me from falling on my face for the past year…I know you don’t knit, but this is for you too. (I won’t tell you we really chose it because it was the cheapest one )

If you told me it would fucking suck. You were right. Knit up.

If you donated in my mum’s name, prompting letters to my dad that he still talks about with tears in his eyes and his voice…this is yours.

And if you also lost someone special to you this year (yes, you, you and of course, you)…this is so much for you.

Minion On The Loose

Hello! Indigodragonfly Minion here!

Just wanted to let y’all know that Kim and Ron have unchained me from the winder for a few hours of freedom.

I really enjoyed meeting some of you at the Knitter’s Frolic in April. It’s swell to actually witness how bonkers people are for this yarn.

I enjoy minioning away in the Squirrel Hut dyeing and winding and saying bizarre things like, “I’ve made the Squid and wound the Hot Cheese and there are two pots of Unicorn ready to go.” or “How many Lizards should we make into Punching?” and “Do we need to weigh more Gesundheits?”

Sometimes I make a thing I call 1xNS which Ron refers to as a dyslexic 80’s band but is in fact the description of a very common dye.

I have learned that “Inara” and “Cordelia” are colourways, neither of which have the words Inara or Cordelia in their proper titles. This was confusing for me for ages.

There is an impressive amount of jargon which I’m fairly certain only exists within the walls of said Squirrel Hut. But I’m starting to speak the lingo.

I’ve caught myself asking the yarn how’s it’s doing. This had not ever occurred before my career as a studio minion.

As much as we all joke about me being a slave, I actually get to play fairly often. Working out my own colourways helps me learn about the properties of the dyes and how to apply them for a desired effect and it keeps me creatively motivated. Which is a very valuable part of any job in my humble opinion. Kim and Ron are great at giving me direction for my colours while still letting me take the lead on those ones. In case you are wondering, my colourways thus far have been: “The Impenetrable Apricot Forcefield”, “Punchline Executed by Five Year Old In More Ways Than One”, The Worst Part of Nodding Off Is Folgers In Your Lap”, “Jeeves, The Prim Reaper” (Ron made the names of those two), “Mongo Only Pawn In Game Of Life”, and most recently, “Caffeinate The Minion!!”

So just in case you were worried about me, I’m good. There was one slightly traumatic incident involving a slightly pornographic arboreal pictograph, but I’ve been seeing a therapist so it’s fine.

The Knitter’s Frolic…I get as excited for this as I did for my birthday when I was 6.  :)

Frolic Forecast: Swoop!

I’ve just finished a new pattern in the Spatial Distortion series!

This one’s called Swoop. Can you guess why?

I loved knitting this and watching the colours play against each other. Perfect for semi-mindless knitting…repetitive enough to be relaxing, but enough changes to keep you interested to the very end.

It’s another Order & Chaos pattern, with instructions that lean both ways.  Line by line written instructions for those who prefer to be guided through each step.  A pattern recipe and guidelines for those who want to go “off road.”  Use one or the other, or something in between.

I haven’t taken it off since knitting it.  Perfect around my neck in this strange not-quite-spring-yet time.  Or draped around my shoulders for a layer of cozy.
